Why would I need a Knee MRI scan?

A knee MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a powerful diagnostic tool used to produce detailed images of the internal structures of your knee — including bones, ligaments, cartilage, tendons, and muscles. It is especially useful when other tests, like X-rays or ultrasound, don’t provide enough detail to confirm a diagnosis.

  • Persistent or unexplained knee pain
  • Swelling or stiffness that won’t go away
  • Clicking, locking, or instability in the joint
  • Limited range of motion or difficulty walking
  • Injuries from sports, exercise, or accidents
  • Pain after surgery or ongoing discomfort from an old injury

Knee MRI FAQs

What is a knee MRI scan?2025-08-08T10:16:47+00:00

A knee MRI scan (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a non-invasive imaging test that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the structures inside your knee. It helps diagnose injuries or conditions affecting ligaments, tendons, cartilage, bones, and soft tissue.

When should I get a knee MRI?2025-08-08T10:17:24+00:00

You may need a knee MRI if you experience:

  • Ongoing or unexplained knee pain
  • Swelling or stiffness
  • Pain after an injury
  • Locking or instability
  • Limited movement or difficulty bearing weight
  • Concerns after knee surgery

A knee MRI is often used when X-rays or physical exams don’t provide enough information.

What does a knee MRI show that other scans don’t?2025-08-08T10:17:45+00:00

Unlike X-rays (which only show bones), an MRI can reveal:

  • Torn ligaments (ACL, MCL, PCL, LCL)
  • Meniscus tears
  • Cartilage damage
  • Tendon inflammation (tendonitis)
  • Fluid buildup or cysts
  • Early signs of arthritis
  • Bone bruises and soft tissue injuries
Do I need a referral to get a knee MRI at Vitalscan?2025-08-08T10:18:04+00:00

No. While referrals are welcome, you don’t need a GP referral to book a private MRI with Vitalscan. You can book directly through our website, and we’ll guide you through the process.

Is the scan painful or uncomfortable?2025-08-08T10:18:18+00:00

Not at all. A knee MRI is completely painless. You’ll be asked to lie still while your knee is positioned in the scanner. The scan usually takes 15–30 minutes, and you’ll be able to communicate with the radiographer at all times.

How should I prepare for my MRI?2025-08-08T10:18:36+00:00

There’s no special preparation required. Just wear comfortable clothing and remove any metal objects before the scan. If you have a pacemaker, metal implants, or are pregnant, please let us know before booking.

How quickly will I get my results?2025-08-27T13:22:18+00:00

You’ll typically receive your results within 3–5 working days. Your scan will be reviewed by a Consultant Radiologist, and we can share the report directly with your GP, consultant, or physiotherapist.
